What Is Your Metabolism Like?

by AbsTrainer

“Shocking” news for me today – even though I suspected it already for a long time. My metabolism is kind of non-existent. How do I know? I did do a metabolic Assessment (Resting + Exercise) today and the results are very interesting (at least to me). So, my resting metabolism translates to 1147 calories that my body would burn per day. Adding the super-(not)heavy activity we desk jockeys do all day (keyboard typing, starring at the monitor, etc.) my body would need less than 1,500 calories per day.

If you read the nutrition labels on food packaging you will see that the average calorie intake is calculated on a 2,000 calorie per day diet. So, if I would stick to a 2,000 calorie per day diet I would be gaining a lot of weight. Now, I am actually an active person and I work out (usually running) for roughly an hour per day. So, one would think I am good after a workout, but apparently going out for a 6 Mile run does not do me good in regards to the calorie burning process. Within 5-10 minutes my body stops burning fat and switches to alternate fuel sources so to speak. That way I still have a good Cardio exercise, but in regards to fat burning it is not.

In the end I am kind of breaking even, but on many days I am not always doing that because my metabolism in general is so low. As a result just by looking at a nice piece of cake or indulging on other yummy foods (even in moderation) I am still consuming more calories than my body can or will burn. No wonder it feels like that I am not getting anywhere with my workouts. In the past when I noticed that I putting on weight I just increased my time to do workouts. And mind you, I am not eating fast food or stuff like that. I am not eating super healthy or unhealthy either and usually I am good with keeping my portions under control – but apparently that is not enough.

The 2 screenshots show you my suggested calorie intake with and without workout. However, I did a second metabolic test to see how well my body burns fat during working out. Well, the news is that in the first 5-10 minutes I am actually burning fat, but after that I am “leaving” the fat burning zone. So, for me to reach a 500 calorie workout I will have to change my workouts for a while to help my metabolism to improve. Not all is lost nor is the sky falling, but it is very interesting how my body has changed over the years.
