My Favorite Ab Workout Routines

by AbsTrainer

On my quest to a flat stomach and some real six pack abs I had to make a few changes to my lifestyle. Some of those changes are related to eating habits, but the majority of the changes are related to how to work out. And since I want to have good looking abdominal muscles, adding specific ab workout routines to my fitness program was a must. I have tried many different ab routines and the ones I am listing here are my favorite ab workouts.

Cable Crunches

Cable CrunchesThese are not your grandpa’s crunches. How do cable crunches work? Use the high pulley for cable crunches. Knee down and grab a cable rope attachment and place wrists against your head. While kneeling on the ground, slightly flex your hips. Now perform crunches by moving your elbows downward, pivoting at approximately the bottom of the ribcage, not the waist. Your waist should not move much at all during this exercise. Exhale as you perform this portion of the movement, hold the pulley down for a few moments and then slowly reverse the first step. Inhale at this moment. Slowly increase the number of repeats over time.

Bent Knee Abdominal Hip Raises

Bent Knee Abdominal Hip RaisesThis is a great abdominal workout. I love this one because you can really feel your ab muscles working. Lie on your back and bend your knees. Straighten your arms and put them down next to your body. Now keep your thighs about 1.5 ft. apart and raise your legs/feet off the floor (see picture). Remember to keep your knees bent at an angle slightly less than 90-degrees. If you want this exercise a little more effective, pull your knees down to your chest. Do several repeats and increase the number of repeats over time. Remember, our bodies “get smart” over time by becoming really effective with exercises that do not challenge us anymore.

Do you need to develop your own strategy to get great abs? No, you don’t and neither did I. Why re-invent the wheel when there are experts out there who have tried all the different ways to exercise already. I am reading a book written by Mike Geary about how to get great abs. While the book is focusing on six pack abs, it is actually a full body workout that also includes a sophisticated diet plan. No, this is not a weight loss program in a classical sense. It talks about how bad processed foods are for your health in general and how you can go shopping for foods that help you to burn fat. I love it. I sleep better, I have more energy, and I look better, too. I never paid attention to other people before, but it is terrifying how many people actually carry around lots of fat around their bellies. Not me anymore.
