I am losing my memory. Well, at least that’s how it feels like sometimes. We’ve all had days when we didn’t feel like we were completely on top of things and forgot important things or even just easy to remember things. Let’s admit it – our brain needs exercise and nourishment the same way as our entire body to stay fit. And as we age our brains grow old as well and so it is important to help the brain to stay young and fit as long as possible. It’s important to combine this with a good workout and so this article is a great fit for your abs workout efforts.
There are many ways to keep your brain functioning the way we want it to. The most important thing is to keep the brain busy and to challenge it every day. Watching soap operas on TV does not fall into that category though. Writing, reading, math, strategic thinking and by playing challenging games our brains stay fit.
In addition, by making smart food choices we can support our precious brain cells longer and improve brain function, too. Here are some easy recommendations for keeping our brain in tip-top shape for a long lasting life.
Blueberries have been shown to shield the brain from stress, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. Scientific research has also shown that diets rich in blueberries significantly improved both the learning capacity and motor skills. Blueberries are considered a super food with lots of antitoxin ingredients.
Nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E, an important vitamin needed by your brain to avoid declining cognitive functions. Cashews, peanuts, walnuts, sunflower and sesame seeds and almonds are all great choices for you to consider. Nuts should be eaten in moderation due to being eventually fatty foods, too.
Avocados, though considered a ‘fatty fruit’ contribute to healthy blood flow and decreased blood pressure, lessening the chances of developing hypertension, which can lead to a stroke. Scientists discovered that most of the fat in an avocado is of the monounsaturated kind. This is considered the good fat that actually lowers cholesterol levels and therefore helps to keep heart disease away a little longer.
Deep-water fish, such as salmon is a wise, fish choice loaded with Omega 3s. It’s abundant in omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are essential for healthy brain function. Please note that wild Salmon tastes better and offers more Omega-3s compared to farmed Salmon.
Whole-grain breads, brown rice, and oatmeal (even better with steel cut oats) also contribute to a very healthy brain by reducing the risk for cardiac disease. By promoting a healthy heart and improved blood flow, the brain is sure to thrive with increased blood oxygen levels. Complex carbohydrates also supply the brain with a solid stream of glucose that increases your brain’s functionality. However, keep in mind that it is very important to avoid the so-called simple carbohydrates. These carbs are most often to be found in junk food and low quality foods. The glucose that comes from these simple carbohydrates gives the brain only a short-lived spike in sugar (also referred to as sugar high) which is often followed by a dramatic crash from this high point. The result?
Simple carbs do not provide a lasting energy and in the end they make you feel hungry, exhausted, and tired. Often people fall into the eating trap to make up for the “loss” in energy and eat more. The result then is unhealthy obesity.
Freshly brewed green tea also is loaded with antioxidants, especially the class known as catechines, which also promotes healthy blood flow and lowers cholesterol. If you prefer black teas you need to be aware that they do contain a lot of caffeine and that it is important to enjoy them in moderation. Green teas are often available with caffeine and a matching decaffeinated version, too.
